The Ashburton bridge at State Highway 1 was closed earlier this morning after motorists reported they could feel it slumping under them.
Reporter Conan Young was one of those who drove south over the bridge before it was closed.
He was at Ashburton Forks on the approach to the Mayfield Valetter Bridge.
