Napier teen shares story of flooding drama

From Morning Report, 6:11 am on 10 November 2020

Napier is in a state of emergency after being swamped by extreme and sudden heavy rain.

The torrential rain on Monday evening forced some people to evacuate their homes, and left thousands more without power.

The rain and floodwaters have subsided overnight, but the water's not gone completely and it could worsen again this afternoon.

It was the second wettest day on record with more than 250 millimetres of rain falling on the Napier city centre from midday yesterday.

Around 350 calls for help have been made to Fire and Emergency since yesterday over slips, flooding, and leaking roofs.

Seventeen-year-old Jesse Pether told our Hawke's Bay reporter Tom Kitchin he was outside where he lives on Brewster Street, on Napier Hill, when there was a sudden large noise.
