Covid-19: Forcing shops to display QR codes won't help - expert

From Morning Report, 6:45 am on 16 July 2020

The government's being told that forcing shops and cafes to display QR codes for Covid-19 tracing won't increase the number of customers using it.

The number of people who've downloaded the Government's tracing app appears to have stalled, with 596,000 people having installed it on their phones as of yesterday, just 5000 more downloads than the same time last week.

The government is again pushing for people to download the app, indicating it may take additional steps such as requiring businesses to display the QR codes.

Dr Rhema Vaithianathan from AUT's Centre for Social Data Analytics told our reporter Matthew Theunissen the government got it wrong from the start.
