Transmission Gully needs overseas workers - lawyer

An immigration lawyer says a construction company which brought in workers from overseas isn't taking the easy way out and the finger pointing needs to stop. One hundred and one workers have been hired from the Philippines to work on Wellington's huge Transmission Gully highway project, infuriating unions who insist locals could have been trained to do the job. E Tu and the Amalgamated Workers Union says companies taking on big projects need to do more to ensure they are sourcing workers locally. But immigration lawyer Aaron Martin, told RNZ reporter Emma Hatton it's not practical to expect a project of this size to be resourced entirely by locals.
