Cyclone Gita: NZ Air Force scours Tonga for damage

From Morning Report, 8:24 am on 14 February 2018

A Royal New Zealand Air Force team is on the way to Tonga to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Gita. After smashing Tonga, the cyclone missed the most populated areas of Fiji on Tuesday night.

RNZ made contact with Tiliva village on Kadavu island on Wednesday morning, with the village chief saying there's rain and larger-than-usual waves, but the wind has died down.

MetService says the eye of the cyclone is more than 400km away from Fiji's main island. A Hercules aircraft left Auckland for Tonga on Tuesday night carrying 12 tonnes of supplies including hygiene kits, temporary shelters, water containers and tarps.

An Orion aircraft is already there. Air Commodore Kevin McEvoy discusses the operation with Susie Ferguson.
