Mumbai building collapses in flood, dozens killed

From Morning Report, 7:26 am on 1 September 2017

After heavy rains and flooding a Mumbai building has collapsed, killing at least 23 people. It's the worst flooding to strike the India and Bangladesh region in years, and at least 1200 people have been killed.

Veena Patwardhan is a freelance jouralist based just out of Mumbai and has been covering the story. She says it was an old building.

"The building was in bad shape, people had been issued a notice to evacuate a few years ago. But only a few families moved out in 2013.

"They don't know how many people could still be trapped inside."

She says south Mumbai has a lot of unsafe old buildings, with about 1600 needing checking.
