"It was unreal. The pressure of the water was unreal."

From Morning Report, 7:27 am on 7 April 2017

Graeme Bourk saw the moment the Rangataiki river breached its floodwall.

Floodwaters have surged through the Bay of Plenty town of Edgecumbe with almost the entire town of 1600 residents evacuated.

Edgecumbe is still under water and its residents scattered as the Rangataiki river continues to sweep through the town.

It could be up to three days before the 1600 residents are allowed back into their homes with police blocking entrances to the town.

Mr Bourk describes the incredible speed of the approaching flood waters, saying he rushed from house to house telling people to get in their cars and drive before it was too late.
