Flooding in Auckland caught many off guard

From Midday Report, 12:11 pm on 31 August 2021

It's been a harrowing night for some Auckland residents after torrential rain led to flash flooding in parts of West Auckland overnight. The severe weather warning put in place for Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula earlier this morning has just been lifted -- it remains in place for Northland. But last night, only a watch was in place and the flooding took many by surprise. As well as homes, the storm affected two vaccination centres at Trusts Arena Waitakare, and the site at the airport. NIWA says it was Kumeu's second wettest day on record with 201 millimetres falling within just 14 hours, equivalent to nearly 150 percent of August's normal rainfall. The police say residents should stay home if it is safe to do so. If people do need to evacuate, they should wear masks and maintain social distancing. Our reporter Sarah Robson has been out and about in the area and spoke to Māni Dunlop.
