10:20  The harshest sentence available to the court in New Zealand

In the High Court in Christchurch Justice Cameron Mander sentenced the man who carried out the mosque attacks in Christchurch on 15 March 2019 to life in prison without the possibility of parole. RNZ News reporter Anan Zaki joins Karyn from Christchurch as he recaps on the day's proceedings including his conversations with survivors and their families, and the past 17 months.

10:30 Legal ramifications of life without parole

This afternoon the man who carried out the mosque attacks in Christchurch on 15 March 2019 was been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of ever leaving jail. This is the first time such a sentence has been handed out in New Zealand. To discuss the significance and ramifications of the sentence Karyn is joined by Otago University Professor of Law, Andrew Geddis.

10:45 The rest is history:  The repeated jail escapes of Joseph Pawelka 

Today marks the anniversary of the final jailbreak of one of New Zealand's most famous escapees. In August 1911 Joseph Pawelka escaped from the Terrace Gaol in Wellington. It was his third high profile escape and it hit headlines around the world. Professor Michael D Jackson wrote a book about Joseph titled The Blind Impress and has been fascinated by jailbird for decades. He joins Karyn from Massachusetts to look back at one of the great mysteries of New Zealand history.
