Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is a significant health problem in New Zealand, killing 100 people a month.

Despite years of discussion, New Zealand has not yet followed other countries and begun screening people for early signs of the disease.

But this year for the first time, screening began in Auckland under a pilot programme which has already saved lives.
