The new school year, about to start, marks the beginning of the Government's new National Standards system for primary school students.

The scheme sets national targets in reading, writing and maths, and parents will begin to receive charts and reports showing their children's progress.

Its introduction has been widely criticised and last year, our Education Correspondent Gael Woods explored whether the standards will achieve their goal of lifting achievement.
