Silent disco while cleaning up your local neighbourhood

From First Up, 5:17 am on 14 April 2023

If listening to '80s music makes you feel like dancin' and seeing litter makes ya feel like pickin' it up, West Auckland is the place to be this Saturday morning.

The Silent Disco City Clean-Up puts a fun musical spin on Tāmaki Makaurau's growing group clean-up movement.

While many people have heard of beach clean-ups, the immense amount of rubbish on city streets also needs our attention, says organiser Yana Kirakovskaya.

"I thought we should take this initiative and clean up the streets. Sometimes the council can't cope with the growth of rubbish that we have so we need to take action," she tells Nathan Rarere.

The silent disco format allows participants to switch between three curated music channels (including 1980s and Hip-hop) on provided headphones.

The success of Auckland's award-winning Silent Disco City Walk was another inspiration for this fun event, which is also a way people can help enhance their city, Yana says.

Even in clean and looked-after parts of Tāmaki, you can find a lot of rubbish and an enormous number of cigarette butts when you start focusing your attention.

"Once you change the perspective of how you look at the world you find so much rubbish that sometimes it feels overwhelming. But at the same time, it feels really nice that we're actually making a difference by using our hands, dedicating this time and also moving our hips and doing it in a fun way."

Yana hopes that silent disco clean-ups will soon be held on a monthly basis in different parts of Auckland.
