The audience at last month's Talent Wairarapa was amazed by the skills of Maceo Field, a 12-year-old who's mastered the art of beatboxing - - a form of vocal percussion that originated in the 1980s.
Maceo Field, who won the annual competition's under-14 division, gives Nathan Rarere a demo and a lesson.
Maceo tells Nathan he has played around with basic beat-boxing for a while, but it wasn't till 2020 - when a new kid with beatboxing skills turned up at his school - the he got really inspired to figure it out.
"Instead of just drums, [this boy] was doing all sorts of sounds. I tried but it didnt sound that good.
"I thought how is he making all those sounds and stuff? And I just fell in love with it and I couldn't stop thinking about it. it was just so cool. You could do it wherever, just make music out of your mouth."
Maceo's dad Cody - a musician and music tutor - says his son has often picked up instruments and figured them out for himself.
With beat-boxing, he's learnt many of his skills via tutorials on YouTube.
