Why anglers are attracted to Manawatawhi, Three Kings Islands

From First Up, 5:53 am on 23 March 2022

The body of a fifth person has been recovered following last weekend's North Cape boating tragedy. Ten people were on board the 17-metre fishing vessel Encharter when it's believed to have been struck by a rogue wave which broke the bridge. Five were hoisted into a rescue helicopter after spending over four hours in the water on Sunday. The group was on a fishing trip to Manawatawhi or Three Kings Islands, which lie about 55km northwest of Cape Reinga. Family members of those lost and others who have previously taken the trip have described it as the trip of a lifetime. Our producer Matthew Theunissen looks at what makes anglers make the journey and why it can be so hazardous.
