Geddis:more could've been done to prevent terror attack

From First Up, 5:53 am on 6 September 2021

The man shot dead by police after stabbing random members of the public at a West Auckland supermarket was a well-known ISIS sympathiser who'd done extensive research on killing non-Muslims. He was of such concern that he was under around-the-clock surveillance by police and the SIS and his case made it all the way to the Prime Minister's office. Prosecutors had tried to charge him under the Terrorism Suppression Act, but the High Court ruled last year that planning an attack wasn't in and of itself 'an offence' under the act. The government has introduced legislation to strengthen the terrorism laws, which is currently going through the select committee process, and which the government and Opposition have agreed to expadite. But University of Otago law professor Andrew Geddis says more could have been done to prevent Friday's attack using our existing laws. He spoke with Nathan Rarere.
