Afghan interpreters who worked for NZDF beg for govt help

From First Up, 5:37 am on 27 August 2021

As you've heard this morning, a suicide bomber has killed at least 50 people at Kabul airport in Afghanistan - which in many ways elevates the importance of our next story.. A group of Afghan interpreters who worked with New Zealand's Defence Force is making a last-ditch plea to the government to help their families escape the Taliban. An NZDF contingent has been evacuating New Zealand residents as well as Afghan nationals who worked with our Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamiyan during the 20 year war. But a group of 44 interpreters who have already re-settled here say they're terrified for family members being targetted by the Taliban because of the work that they did with New Zealand's Defence Force. They're pleading with the government to expedite their visa applications - some of which were lodged years ago - and also to extend the eligibility criteria for refugee visas, so their parents and siblings can apply too. But as Matthew Theunissen reports, time is running out.
