Former Afghan interpreter tells of fears for family left behind
One of the Afghan interpreters who helped New Zealand's Provincial Reconstuction Team in Bamyan says his family has fled to the mountains to escape Taliban death squads, who he fears will target them because of the work he did. The man, who we'll refer to as Ali, was allowed to resettle in New Zealand in 2013 with his immediate family but left his parents, brothers and siblings in Afghanistan. He is terrified about what could happen if they don't get help. Ali was was unclear what Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's announcement yesterday about assistance for families of people who worked with the Defence Force would mean for his loved ones. He spoke with our producer Matthew Theunissen.
