Proud parents of Tom Walsh share kisses after Bronze medal

From First Up, 5:44 am on 6 August 2021

Just before Lisa Carrington made history on the water, over at Japan National Stadium shotputter Tom Walsh was adding a chapter to his story, winning his second Olympic medal. Walsh came away with the bronze with a best throw of 22.47 metres, 83 centimetres behind winner Ryan Crouser who bettered his own Olympic record with his Gold Medal throw. Back home in Timaru, Tom Walsh's parents Peter and Karen were watching on the edge of their seats. When we heard from Peter yesterday, he said that his wife gave him the first kiss in 10 years when Tom qualified for the finals. We wanted to know what happened after he won a medal ... The couple spoke to our producer Matthew Theunissen, who began by asking Peter how much hard work his son put into claiming a place on the Olympic podium.
