NZ joins international condemnation of Myanmar's military

From First Up, 5:16 am on 29 March 2021

New Zealand has joined an international chorus of condemnation of Myanmar's military, after a weekend which saw over 100 peaceful protesters - and innocent bystanders including children - dead. Saturday's crackdown on pro-democracy protesters was the bloodiest day of violence since last month's coup, when the military seized control from Aung San Suu Kyi's government. A dozen top miltary officers, including New Zealand's head of the Defence Force, Air Marshal Kevin Short, released a joint statement yesterday condemning the deadly use of force by Myanmar's security forces and saying the country's military has lost credibility with its people. Our producer Matthew Theunissen spoke with Union Aid chairperson Ross Wilson, who's been involved with Myanmar's democracy movement for more than 20 years through his union work.
