LDR West Coast: tourism and rates concerning locals

From First Up, 5:31 am on 18 February 2021

We have heard a lot lately about the collapse of international tourism and the impact of that on the West Coast glacier towns of Franz Josef and Fox - which relied on it. Franz is still waiting to hear if the government will still stump up with the 24 million dollars it promised last year for flood protection work which would inject some life and cash into the town and help it survive the Covid crisis. But it's been a different story further north in the Buller district - where towns like Reefton are reaping the benefit of a surge in domestic tourism and a lockdown-free summer. Nathan Rarere spoke about this with LDR reporter Lois Williams who has been covering the impacts of our closed borders. He started by asking how the latest Covid restrictions have been felt on the West Coast.
