Expo showcases lifestyle of Tiny Houses

From First Up, 5:16 am on 11 February 2021

For many New Zealanders, the idea of one day owning a home is little more than a dream. But in growing numbers, they're joining a global movement aimed at getting people on the property ladder despite the impossible prices ... even if they don't have too much room to stretch out when they get there. Tiny houses, as they're known, are compact and often portable homes which are designed to utilise every last centimetre of space. But with no specific legislation in place for tiny houses, owners are finding themselves at loggerheads with authorities over their compliance with building regulations. A tiny house expo got underway in Motueka over the weekend to showcase the tiny house lifestyle and to highlight the challenges owners face. One of the organisers, Julie Jacobson, told Nathan Rarere what they're hoping to achieve through the expo.
