St John staff affected by Whakaari eruption
The in-house psychologist at St John says the Whakaari eruption was the first volcanic episode its staff would have responded to. Wednesday marks one year since the volcano off the coast of Whakatane blew, killing some 22 people and severely burning others. Adele Saunders says St John staff are used to working under demanding conditions. But the eruption was harrowing due to the severity of the injuries, a lack of information at times and the fact it was a volcanic eruption.
