Bees getting busy, new hives formed during swarm season
After their own winter lockdown of sorts New Zealand's bees are getting busy again. The blooming flowers and warmer weather mark the start of swarm season, when bees form new hives because their old ones are getting too crowded. Finding these big buzzing balls in the garden can be a bit of a shock. But Auckland Bee Keepers Club president Steve Leslie says not to worry - there are plenty of beekepers who will happily come round and take them to a new home. He told our reporter Louise Ternouth the club has re-hived half a dozen or so swarms already this Spring.
