Electoral Commission apologises for mistakes on ballots

From First Up, 5:45 am on 7 October 2020

The Electoral Commission is under fire for a number of problems with advanced voting including an error on ballots which risked hampering votes for one party. The commission has apologised to the party, Vision New Zealand, after the white circle for people to place a tick by the party's name was missing from voting papers sent to the Port Waikato Electorate. Vision New Zealand's leader, Hannah Tamaki, says she was shocked and disappointed to learn of the error, which left her feeling insecure about ballot papers across the country. In addition, staff couldn't find a Maori roll in one polling place and at others people had to cast special votes because they'd run out of ballots. The chief electoral officer Alicia Wright spoke with producer Matthew Theunissen.
