Wellington Water: partially treated sewage ends up in harbour

From First Up, 5:13 am on 20 August 2020

New Zealanders flush toilets millions of times each day, but official data shows many of them lead to treatment plants that are not meeting conditions for treating wastewater. Data is available on half the country's wastewater treatment plants and states just over a quarter are fully compliant with their consent conditions. The status of the remaining treatment plants is unknown, meaning total compliance may be even lower. RNZ has learned that one of them is Porirua. Wellington Water's chief advisor for wastewater, Steve Hutchison, admitted to our environment reporter, Rachel Thomas, "partially treated" sewage is being sent into the harbour more often than it should.
