Lost Nightlife of Auckland facebook page brings back memories

A Facebook group celebrating the Auckland nightlife of decades past has amassed more than 17,000 members.

The Lost Nightlife of Inner-City Auckland is the brainchild of well-known Auckland identity Simon Grigg.

RNZ's Bridget Burke tracks Grigg down to his home in Thailand to talk about the page and the enormous reaction it's gathering from former party people.

People are always nostalgic about the nightlife of years past and Grigg had a lot of photos from his years in the scene.

He set up the Facebook group up six weeks ago to celebrate Auckland nightclubs, bars and clubs from the 1960s through to the early 2000s.

The group's members - who are based all over the world - are posting photos and connecting over beloved venues of the past, Grigg says.

Two of these - Cause Celebre/The Box - Grigg once co-owned. He also remembers them as his favourite spots to hang out.

"I always thought that was a great melting pot of people as well … you had jazz on one side, live bands, and then unforgiving dance music on the other side. So you got both crowds … All the different kinds of people. Different ages, different races, different whatever all came together and mixed quite happily."

The 1990s was probably the heyday of Auckland's nightlife, Grigg says.

"That's when it all came together and it was very open… it was very embracing.

"I know there were drugs around but people weren't getting completely wasted then as they possibly were a little bit later on."
