Navigator applies way-finding to teaching youth

From First Up, 5:10 am on 27 November 2019

The navigator on a Polynesian vaka currently making its way around Aotearoa/New Zealand is helping youth in her native Tahiti to re-learn the ways of the sea. Moeata Galenon is an employment counsellor in Papeete, and is currently on board the double-hull vessel, Fa'afaite, here for the Tuia250 commemorations. They mark 250 years of dual heritage since Captain James Cook's arrival 250 years ago. Ms Galenon told our Te Tauihu reporter Tracy Neal, that she was guided as much by the stars as ancestral knowledge when planning the long ocean voyage from Tahiti.
