Record numbers of voters turn out for Hong Kong elections

From First Up, 5:08 am on 25 November 2019

Voters in Hong Kong have turned out in record numbers to cast their ballots in the territory's district council elections. Nearly 2.9 million people had voted in the hour before polls shut - that's a 69 percent turnout and almost double the number of voters at the last district council elections. The elections are being viewed as a referendum on the leadership of Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam who has been the focus of mass protests since attempting to introduce an extradition bill to parliament in April. What began as largely peaceful protests five months ago, have now turned into more violent clashes between protesters and police. Indira Stewart spoke to Grace Lee.
