Methamphetamine dealers who can prove their own personal addiction played a role in their offending are now eligible for a sentence reduced by up to thirty-percent. It's just one of many changes to methamphetamine sentencing options laid out in a Court of Appeal judgement which overhauls guidelines used by judges since 2005. Another change is that Lawyers and Judges are now encouraged to adjourn sentencings, to allow time for an offender to enter rehab. Ross Bell from the Drug Foundation told reporter Katie Doyle the court has acknowledged that society is moving towards accepting drug addiction as a health issue.
