University students are applauding government moves to bring in tougher rules to ensure they get better care in hostels.. But they also say it's tragic someone had to die to force change. The body of 19-year-old Canterbury University student Mason Pendrous was discovered in his room last month several weeks after he'd died. The government is changing the law so tertiary institutions can be fined 100 thousand dollars if they're responsible for serious harm or death at hostels or halls. It's also bringing in a mandatory code of practice code laying out clear expectations for student care. Sam Brosnahan from the University of Canterbury Students Association backs the move.
