Dunedin students clean up street to honour Sophie Crestani

From First Up, 5:19 am on 14 October 2019

Yesterday thousands of people in Dunedin showed up to take part in a street clean up of North Dunedin's student quarter to honour the memory of Otago University student, Sophia Crestani. The 19-year-old was fatally injured when hundreds of people tried to flee a crowded flat party on Dundas Street just on October 5th. The clean up was organised at the request of Sophia's parents. Students Rebekah Wairau and Khata Pearce were at the same flat party where Sophia died and they were among those cleaning up the neighbourhood yesterday. They told RNZ's Otago-Southland reporter, Timothy Brown, why it was important to come along and show solidarity with North Dunedin's young community.
