A Blue Belt around greater Wellington would protest marine life

From First Up, 5:40 am on 10 October 2019

A blue belt across the entire Greater Wellington region has been proposed by a regional council candidate. Thomas Nash, who is standing in the Poneke / Wellington constituency, says the council needs to do more to protect the area's marine life. The idea has been raised in the past, with campaigners calling on Wellington City Council to create a harbour blue belt back in 2013. The Council says they're still doing a lot of work under that initiative - they just haven't called it a blue belt. Mr Nash wants to create an area that would encompass the entire coastline of the Greater Wellington region - all eight thousand squared kilometres of it. Wellington issues reporter Laura Dooney sat down with him to find out why he wants one, and what it would mean.
