UK Supreme Court hears appeals on parliament's suspension

The Supreme Court has been hearing two appeals to determine whether the Prime Minister acted lawfully in suspending Parliament. The five-week suspension of Parliament began a week ago and MPs are not scheduled to return until 14 October. Prime Minister Boris Johnson claims his decision to prorogue Parliament is normal practice and will allow him to set out his policy plans in a Queen's Speech in October But his critics, which include many of his own former colleagues, say it was a ploy to prevent MPs from debating the prospect of the UK leaving the European Union with a no-deal Brexit.
