Floridian family evacuate from east coast as Dorian strikes

From First Up, 5:08 am on 3 September 2019

As the hurricane inches slowly towards the US, the states of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas have all declared states of emergency with residents preparing to evacuate. The National Hurricane Center says while Dorian has now weakend to a category four it will remain a powerful hurricane during the next couple of days. The hurricane is currently sitting around 240 kilometers off the Florida coast, which is expected to face life-threatening storm surges and dangerous winds. The center says that only a slight deviation in the path of the storm could bring Dorian directly over Florida's east coast. But many aren't waiting to be told to leave - local resident Victor Melendez and his family have packed up and left in his 1971 VW bus. Indira spoke to him just before we came to air - and began by asking how close does he normally live to the coast.
