Explaining the flu

From First Up, 5:45 am on 7 June 2019

Winter is well and truly here - and with that comes flu season. In Australia there's been more than 55,000 cases of the flu and 119 deaths so far - whilst here in New Zealand, three people have died. There's also been a record up-take of the flu vaccine here, with nearly 1 point 3 million vaccinated. That's led to a shortage in supply - and the Ministry of Health saying flu vaccines will now only be given to people eligible for publicly funded jabs, including the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, and pregnant women. While flu season comes around every year - many of us still have lots of questions about it, so joining me now to guide us through it is Professor Michael Baker from the University of Otago's Department of Public Health.
