Housing Minister: NZ forgotten how to properly shelter citizens

From First Up, 5:10 am on 6 June 2019

The housing minister Phil Twyford says New Zealand has forgotten how to properly shelter its citizens - a fundamental human right. Mr Twyford was speaking at the re-opening of the country's largest emergency housing hostel in the inner city Auckland suburb of Freemans Bay last night. The five million dollar renovation was the James Liston Hostel's first since it was built in the 1960s. t comes after last year's regional homelessness count, which found at least three thousand six hundred people living without shelter. The refurbishment increases the hostel's capacity by seven, with a total of more than fifty beds. Mr Twyford said the refurbishment gives him hope.
