Whanganui pensioners' pets safe for now

From First Up, 5:37 am on 30 May 2019

A couple of weeks ago we told you about the plight of some bird owning pensioner housing tenants in Whanganui. They were initially ordered to get rid of their pet birds by the 9th of May or face 90 day notices on their tenancies. Many pensioners were upset at having to get rid of their pets - as you can imagine, for some, these pets were their close companions - and they'd had them in the property for years before and it hadn't been a problem. It sparked debate in the local community and calls for a review of the council's pet policy which up until then, hadn't been enforced before in regards to domestic pets like birds. Indira spoke to councillor Josh Chandulal-MacKay - who met with other councillors this week to decide what the council would do.
