Microsoft, NIWA team up on AI weather forecast project

From Checkpoint, 6:18 pm on 21 November 2019

Microsoft and NIWA are pairing up and using artificial intelligence to computerise more than a million hand written weather records dating back more than a century.

The information will be used to better understand extreme weather patterns - including what causes them and why.

But the machines need to taught to recognise variations in handwriting - so they can translate records into a database.

Lisa Owen asks NIWA's Doctor Drew Lorrey to explain how it works.
