AT THE MOVIES #702       AUTHORS AND OTHERS

 Simon Morris notes the lack of independent movie “auteurs” at the moment, but welcomes one in the shape of Darren Aronofski.   He also welcomes a less elevated thriller, and one from a British A Team.

American Assassin revives the old-fashioned spy thriller.  Starring Michael Keaton and Dylan (Maze Runner) O’Brien.

Victoria and Abdul reunites reliable English director Stephen Frears with his Philomena star, Dame Judi Dench playing Queen Victoria again, 20 years after Mrs Brown.

 And the controversial Mother!   Is Darren Aronofski’s drama/allegory a breath of fresh air, or one of the worst films ever?  Stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem and Michelle Pfeiffer.
