Go back in New Zealand history about one generation, and you'd find a nation of tea drinkers. Travelers would encounter tea rooms scattered throughout the Dominion, usually in small towns. These were places to refresh oneself from the rigors of the road journey and partake of a nice hot cuppa and a jam and cream scone - all very civilised really.
