Maze's fortieth anniversary

Forty years ago Stuart Landsborough defied the advice of his bank, family and friends, and built a maze in the tiny settlement of Wanaka. With a population of just 800 people, and any holiday-makers heading straight to the lake or mountains, Stuart was told his unique visitor attraction would never fly. Regardless of this advice, he sold his house, bought seven acres, and built the world's first wooden maze. The fortieth anniversary of this unusual business - which saw its three-millionth customer this year - has just been celebrated in Wanaka.
