Hopalong Cassidy

From Afternoons, 2:16 pm on 15 August 2013

The jingle of Hopalong Cassidy's silver spurs could be heard on the Sunday Morning radio programme in New Zealand every Sunday morning in the 1950's. The cowboy hero and sworn enemy of crime and cruelty used his quick-draw shooting skills and trusty horse Topper to bring justice to the wild west. Hoppy, as he was known to his friends, was one of the first truely global superstars of radio, tv and motion pictures. In 1954, the actor who played Hopalong Cassidy William Boyd, visited Australia and crowds as big as the ones for the Queen.
