In our part of the world, for centuries, fires were intentionally set to clear the land by Maori and Europeans. But flames do not bend to anyone's will, and too often the fires would also rage out of control, destroying farms, homes and businesses. In her newest book author Helen Beaglehole turns her attention to the early burn off disasters in New Zealand, and how they shaped our current policy on wildfires and the rural fire service.
