Your Place - Macraes Flat

From Afternoons, 1:22 pm on 11 July 2013

Macraes Flat took its name from a shepherd who worked on a local high country station during the early Otago gold rush of the 1860s. The township is at the northern edge of a plateau, 500 metres above sea level, half way between the towns of Palmerston and Hyde and 55 kilometres north of Dunedin. Gold mining is still big here; this is the location of our largest operating mine, producing around 170,000 ounces annually.
