Ancestor worship or ‘Ching Ming’ is recognised by Chinese across the world. Both Buddhist Chinese and Maori recognise that our ancestors walk among us. So what happens when there’s a clash between cultures over specific rituals? For Maori, it’s tapu or forbidden to consume food on burial sites or Urupa, but for Chinese, the practice of Bai san makes it essential to feed the hungry ghost of your ancestor as much as possible.
