Your Place - Cape Foulwind
An original Maori village on the site was called Omau, and that name still surfaces from time to time. In 1642, Abel Tasman named it Rocky Cape, but he didn't land here and the name didn't stick. In 1770, Captain James Cook's ship Endeavour encountered a storm that blew him out to sea and it is his name for this prominent headland that is in common usage today.
