Your Place - Geraldine

From Afternoons, 1:22 pm on 16 August 2012

The town of Geraldine has had at least four names. The Maori called the area Heratini, but in the 1840s early European pioneers named their new settlement Talbot Forrest. By 1857 a larger community had been established and its name was changed to Fitzgerald after the first superintendent of the Canterbury Province. By 1884, the had name changed again to Geraldine, one of James Fitzgerald's Irish family names.
