Hokonui moonshine becomes legal

From Afternoons, 2:21 pm on 18 August 2011

When alcohol was banned in Southland in 1902 moonshine flowed illegally from the Hokonui Hills west of Gore. Most of it was made by the McRae family, a Scottish clan who had been driven off their land in the Highlands. It was known around the district as Hokonui Moonshine. After years of paperwork and legal battles the distillation of the famous firewater is about to begin again in Gore.
