Puriri sinking

More than 100 people will gather at Whangarei Heads to remember a wartime tragedy that took place seventy years ago. On 14 May 1941, six men died when the HMS Puriri hit a mine and sank. It was the only sinking by enemy action inside New Zealand waters.
