Napier earthquake

From Afternoons, 2:10 pm on 31 January 2011

80 years ago this week, at 10.46 am on February 3rd 1931, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale rocked Hawke's Bay. Fires completely destroyed downtown Napier. 258 peopled in the region lost their lives. Athaea Shepard had just turned 11. She and her classmates at the Napier Central School had just gone outside for play time, as they called it, when the earthquake happened. Athaea and other earthquake survivors will be sharing their memories this week at commemorative services and events to mark the anniversary organised by the Art Deco Trust. We talk to Athaea, and to General Manager of the Art Deco Trust Sally Jackson.
